Sad that Adam doesnā€™t like our Lightning Comments idea. All we are trying to do here is double down on what is already working and what our users love about Podcasting 2.0. Before this update to show boosts as comments, many of the top podcasters on Fountain were not even able to read the boost messages. In our view this is one of the biggest factors limiting the adoption of value for value. We believe surfacing boosts as comments makes the experience much better for all.

On the philosophical debate around whether a comment should cost money to post - surely each app and podcaster can decide which approach they want to take? - if paid comments are just one option in the social interact tag this choice is always available. On the limits of TLV - we are very aware of this and I donā€™t think having messages here is the long term solution - but itā€™s working right now for the value block and if itā€™s working there it can work for comments until there's a better option.

We are open to using a different cross-app comments system - but I do think integrating boosts is such a cool feature that I know both users and podcasters want. I havenā€™t heard any other proposed solutions / suggestions that integrate boosts with comments. I would love to hear what your preferred approach would be - do you think boosts and comments are fundamentally different and should not be displayed together in apps?

so the comnents from my social interact as specified in the feed dont surface in fountain? Or am i seeing both?

@adam youā€™re right we should be showing comments from the social interact tag here. I think we might have taken the running with scissors ethos a bit too far šŸ˜… although for what itā€™s worth there was a beta version of this available for 2 weeks and we only received good feedback!

@dave @adam new version of Fountain is now live that lets us disable lightning comments for shows that don't want them. I've disabled on Podcasting 2.0. @adam let me know if you want me to disable for No Agenda / your other shows. It's manual right now because I didn't see the socialInteract tag in the index API (assuming because the tag is still in proposal) We will respect it for all shows once it's there, along with a `visibility` attribute or similar if we can add to the value block.

I think it's a great idea Oscar but should be kept separate from 'boostagrams'. For example I just read below every comment they will read on the next show, this makes me less inclined to listen to that section. I think boostagrams should be sent directly to the podcaster and lightning comments to everyone. Maybe just a default 5 or 10 sats for a lightning comment and then boostagrams are where the viewer can send the real 'look at this!' value.

@meremortalspodcast - Agreed! Boostagrams and comments should be separate, at very least presented differently because the context of a message to the show and a comment are very different. Iā€™m also not clear, is this a cross-app commenting system or something just in Fountain?

I see, Fountain now surfaces boosts as comments. Are these actually cross app with the spec or just something Fountain is doing with the boosts it can see (that originate with the app)?

@bmasi here you have replied to a comment which inherently cannot be private. Private boosts only affects boosts. I agree this is confusing though - lots of work need to clarify things - apologies to Dave and Adam!

Hi @merryoscar, thatā€™s what I was thinking when I tried it. I just wanted to check that I could use comments as comments while boosts were set to private. that way, I can boost to a show directly without it showing as a comment and comment when I want to comment!

Iā€™ve never rolled dice in the bathroom but I have in the living room alone with the curtains closed. You never know who could be watching. šŸ‘€

I'm more of an open air dicer if you know what I mean. I feel like the shape and form of the dice are a natural thing and shouldn't be hidden away. I'm actually thinking of joining a nudist/dice colony. Freeing myself from the shackles of societal stigma šŸ¤£

For what itā€™s worth I still believe that having boots public and allowing other listeners and the host to reply in the app brings so much more to the podcast listening experience. I get that we moved a bit too quickly on this but I would love to come on the show again one day to discuss the pros and cons.
